Edvard Höfler

4. Aug, 2020

On this day exactly 40 years ago (4 August 1980), Edvard Höfler passed away. He was an exceptional persona, an engineer in every sense of the word, an expert with extensive theoretical knowledge. Due to his persistence and discipline, he successfully fulfilled professional challenges in a relatively wide area of electric power facilities. He knew the apparatuses, devices, installations and systems. His knowledge of technology and functionality of individual devices was extremely valuable. He acquired that knowledge from many years of experience in the designing of devices, engineering, construction and operation of facilities.
He came to the Milan Vidmar Electric Power Research Institute in 1948, when it was actually founded. As an expert he started working in the area of high voltage devices and their testing. He initiated and organised the construction of the high voltage laboratory. The laboratory started operating in 1962 and was one of the first laboratories in the former Yugoslavia, working in the field of high voltage research.
He was an expert in writing expert papers for publication. His collection of written papers includes several expert monographs, research reports, manuals and books in high voltage and lightning protection; he also wrote informational, general and expert articles. He also managed work in professional organisations, because he was a persistent and skilful organiser. During his research work, he mentored many younger engineers and contributed greatly to the excellent reputation of the institute.
Since 1981, the Milan Vidmar Electric Power Research Institute commemorates his 30-year work period and activities by organising the bi- or triennial Höfler Days symposium.
